Two years later, the country still doesn't know exactly what happened on the night of July 6 to 7, 2021, at the residence of the former presidential couple. There are as many versions of the assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse as there are statements in the press. Can we rely on the Haitian justice system to uncover the truth?
Our justice system does not have a reputation for being efficient. Extended pretrial detention is one of the major flaws of the judicial system. According to available statistics, over 80% of the prison population is awaiting trial. Nevertheless, the Ministers of Justice and government commissioners who have succeeded each other in recent years have always made it their mission to alleviate prison overcrowding. At the same time, significant amounts of money have been invested by the Haitian state and the international community in an impossible reform of the judicial system.
