Haitian students officially returned to school over a month ago. This is considered a victory for political and educational authorities who are not always able to enforce the official start date of the school year. In a press release this Friday, UNESCO expressed joy over the commencement of the 2023-2024 school year, which brings hope to children and families. The start of the school year should be a mere formality, but considering the multifaceted crisis the country is facing, it is a significant event. This Friday, Minister of National Education and Vocational Training, Nesmy Manigat, celebrated the gradual reopening of the Carrefour-Feuille public school.
Carrefour-Feuille public school will not be the last educational institution to reopen its doors. In several places across the country, the start of the school year is still not in effect. Some schools plan to welcome their students on Monday, October 16th. It's not surprising that others don't even know if they will reopen their doors this year. In some cases, this is due to the activities of gangs, while in others, it's the impoverishment of households that needs to be pointed out.
