-1.9% is the growth rate that the Haitian economy recorded for the year 2023. Responding to questions from economist Kesner Pharel, the host of the program "Les grands rendez-vous économiques" (Great Economic Meetings), a segment dedicated to former Governor Leslie Delatour, on January 2, 2024, the new governor of the central bank, Ronald Gabriel, outlined the conditions for a return to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth in the country after five consecutive years of contraction.
"Over the last five years, we have seen a cumulative contraction of more than 10%, averaging 2% per year. It's as if we were in a trap of negative growth. We need to consider the factors that will help us break out of this cycle of negative growth," stated the head of the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH), emphasizing that the country needs to grow at more than 2% per year over the next five years for a true return to the path of growth. Thus, he said, we could find ourselves at the same level as we were five years ago.
