"The theme of World Water Day 2024 was 'Water for Peace,' celebrated on March 22nd each year. This theme couldn't be more relevant for Haiti at a time when the country needs to better manage its water resources along with restoring a climate of peace. In the absence of this peace, the water issue can worsen, and the water crisis can further plunge the country into instability. In this context, Haiti must address both these problems or crises simultaneously.
It's evident that Haiti is facing a water crisis. According to the World Bank, access to safe water supply and sanitation services in rural areas is not only low but also declining. In 2020, only 43% of Haiti's rural population had access to basic drinking water supply, compared to 48% in 2015 and 50% in 1990. This is much lower than the average of 90% in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2022, which is quite concerning.
