In a report presented by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the UN Security Council on April 19, it was noted that 2,380 people were killed or injured in Haiti during the first quarter of 2024. The report also expressed growing "concern" over drug and firearm trafficking in southern Haiti.
"The escalating gang violence is taking a heavy toll on the safety and security of Haitians. In March 2024, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reported that at least 1,554 Haitians were killed and 826 injured in the first three months of 2024. According to the United Nations, more than 15,000 Haitians were forced to flee during the first two months of 2024, adding to the over 362,000 people, half of whom are children, already displaced within the country. Media and human rights reports have detailed widespread extortion, kidnappings, and sexual violence," reads the report from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
