World Environment Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm in Haiti on June 5th, with activities taking place across the country to mark the occasion. This focus on the environment is crucial, especially during this period of crisis when the state is largely absent. Even in times of relative peace, the environment has often been treated as a low priority and neglected. The advanced state of disrepair of major streets in Haiti's cities, particularly in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, highlights this widespread disregard for environmental protection.
If the streets are not cleaned, it is clear that the rivers are also neglected. In these times of acute socio-political crisis, the remaining forest cover is at the mercy of environmental exploiters, increasing Haiti’s vulnerability to natural disasters. Unregulated construction on hills and other areas that should be protected further heightens the risk, explaining why even a single rainstorm can lead to potential catastrophe.
