While gangs continue to show they are not yet deterred by threats from the new authorities to crack down on them, the director of the Haitian National Police announced the end of the free rein. During a joint press conference on Monday with the Kenyan commander of the multinational force, Rameau Normil announcedyu muscular operations against the gangs. He did not specify a date or time for the start of operations but promised that the PNH communication department would soon report the initial results of the operations. Are these just new promises? We'll have to wait for the coming weeks and days to see what unfolds.
For his first meeting with the press, Rameau Normil had at least one piece of good news to share: the police have regained control of the HUEH, the country's largest hospital center, which had fallen under gang control for months. It's a small victory for the PNH and for the healthcare system, even though much work remains to be done. The goal is to create secure conditions so that healthcare personnel, administrative staff at HUEH, patients, and their families can safely return to the institution.
