"Data available as of June 30, 2024, show a mixed performance across key banking system indicators," according to the BRH’s monetary policy note for the third quarter of the 2023-2024 fiscal year. "The net banking product (NBP) generated by the system decreased by 2.7%, reaching 8.6 billion gourdes, amid a macroeconomic environment fraught with uncertainties. This decline is attributed to reductions in the 'Other Income' (-52.9%) and 'Foreign Exchange Gains' (-1.4%) components. Due to a 1.5% increase in operating expenses (6.4 billion gourdes), net banking profit fell to over one billion gourdes, reflecting a negative change of 31.6% on a quarterly basis. Consequently, there has been a deterioration in banking profitability relative to key system ratios. As of June 30, 2024, the return on assets (ROA) was 0.64%, down from 0.94% in the previous quarter. Similarly, the return on equity (ROE) was 7.68%, compared to 11.13% the previous quarter," the monetary policy note states.

"During the third quarter, the sector’s assets contracted by 0.4% from the previous quarter, amounting to 645.47 billion gourdes. This decline results from simultaneous decreases in 'Other Liquidity' (-18.1%), 'Treasury Bills' (-9.9%), 'Cash Holdings' (-6.3%), and 'Foreign Assets' (-5.6%), while 'BRH Bills' increased by 141.4%. Nevertheless, the level of banking intermediation, measured by the 'Gross Loans to Total Deposits' ratio, slightly decreased to 24.4% from 25.6% as of March 31, 2024," the note explains.
