As the end of the moratorium authorized by Circular 115-5 approaches, the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH) remains undecided on whether it will be extended. During a press conference held on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, in Delmas, BRH Governor Ronald Gabriel stated that the decision on whether to renew the moratorium is still pending. "We are engaging in discussions with financial institutions, particularly commercial banks, to determine the most appropriate measures to take on this issue," Governor Gabriel explained, noting that he is not yet in a position to announce whether the moratorium on loans will be extended.
In his remarks, the BRH governor highlighted both the importance and the limitations of the moratorium. "We are aware that the moratorium is not a permanent solution to the financial sector's challenges. However, this decision gives businesses a temporary period of relief," stated Ronald Gabriel.
