The United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Haiti, María Isabel Salvador, informed the Security Council on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, that the situation in Haiti has worsened in recent months, despite the ongoing deployment of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS).

"The situation in Haiti has not improved. There has been a 22% increase in the number of displaced people, and the political process is facing significant challenges, turning hope into deep concern," Salvador told the Council, as cited in a UN dispatch. "There are now over 700,000 internally displaced people, which represents a 22% increase over the past three months. Despite the initial progress I reported in July, the political process is now confronting considerable obstacles, turning hope into deep worry," said Salvador, head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH).
