The United States has sent the UN an order for the immediate suspension of the use of its contribution to the trust fund for the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS). A total of $13.3 million out of its $15 million contribution has been frozen, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric informed when questioned about the consequences of the halt in U.S. aid on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. "Regarding Haiti, we have received an official notification from the United States requesting an immediate halt to the work funded by their contribution to the Multinational Security Support Force. This has two immediate impacts. What I can tell you is that the United States had committed to providing $15 million to the trust fund; $1.7 million of this amount has already been spent, meaning that $13.3 million is now frozen," he said. Does this mean you have to return that amount? "No. For now, it is simply frozen. Understood," responded Stéphane Dujarric.

This freeze comes in a context of underfunding for the MSS, worsening security conditions, and the massacre last week of at least 50 people by armed gangs in Kenscoff, according to human rights organizations.
