The flower market may no longer be what it once was, but some continue with a business that struggles to stay afloat. Others, like Mr. Flower, have managed to carve out a place for themselves and reinvent the market through marketing efforts. Whether behind the glass windows of specialized flower shops or out in the streets, demand for flowers has never been higher.
There are nearly 150 florists in the heart of Pétion-Ville, near Place Saint-Pierre, chasing after cars and motorcycles in search of flowers—whether for the living or the dead. While they may not have the charisma and charm of Pakistani rose sellers, they have their determination. In a dilapidated structure that serves as a market, Junior shares his story: “I’ve been in this business for over a decade. I used to sell in Lalue, but due to many difficulties, I moved to Pétion-Ville.” Upon request, this florist not only creates bouquets but also funeral wreaths and floral decorations for weddings.
