The U.S. Ambassador, Dennis B. Hankins, more than a year after the April 3 agreement, is counting down the days of the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT). “It is now a matter of 278 days before February 7, 2026, when an elected president and new institutions are expected,” he said, emphasizing the necessity for the government to have a “credible” plan to restore democratic institutions.

The diplomat went on to bring out the clock, laid bare the CPT’s shortcomings, and expressed hope for original ideas to restore democratic and constitutional institutions in Haiti. “We see the difficulties of this transition. We are only a few months away from the end of this administration’s term. At the beginning, I saw a willingness from all vital sectors to work together in the national interest. More and more, we see that party interests and individual ambitions are making this work difficult. The conflicts and complications within the CPT are hindering progress,” noted the ambassador, who expressed hope that at the end of this “transition process we will have something more democratic and more constitutional than what we have now.”
