In the 1960s, young musicians from the middle and upper classes created small bands with rock’n’roll influences, naming them Les Copains, Les Aces de Pétion-Ville, Les Jets, Les Manfoubens, Les Vampires, Les Shelberts, Les Corvington… These groups performed at house parties, in movie theaters, school dances, and on radio shows, especially on Radio Haïti.
Ibo Combo was among the very first musical groups formed by very young artists in the 1960s. It inherited the spirit of the Ensemble Ibo Lélé, founded by maestro Rodolphe Legros, who animated dance evenings at the Ibo Lélé hotel in the 1950s. Born in 1962 in this climate of musical effervescence, the group brought together musicians from other bands. Its name reflected their attraction to small jazz combos and Brazilian bossa nova groups.
