The Trump administration has a plan to eradicate arms trafficking in the region, announced U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a joint press conference with his Mexican counterpart, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, on September 3, 2025. “Part of our security plan, part of our implementation, is to eradicate arms trafficking. We have requested the involvement of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. We have called on the FBI,” he said. “These weapons are being shipped to Haiti, to Jamaica, to Trinidad, to the Caribbean. And we are going to put an end to it. That is part of our implementation strategy,” explained Marco Rubio. “We are going to put an end to it,” insisted the U.S. Secretary of State, who emphasized the importance of cooperation with countries in the region to achieve this objective. Rubio is relying on the sharing of information, essential in the context of investigations to trace back to arms trafficking networks. “For example, Mexican authorities can seize a certain number of weapons. They can send us that information, specifying what weapons they are, and then, thanks to our systems, we can identify where those weapons come from, identify the trafficking group that is sending them here, and prevent it from happening again,” illustrated Marco Rubio.
“Or we will be able to seize the weapons and prevent their arrival, because we know these networks and we are going to dismantle them. That is part of our agreement and what we are working on. And moreover, we believe this strengthens our own security,” he continued.
