A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas came into effect on Friday in the Gaza Strip, prompting tens of thousands of displaced people to return across the Palestinian territory, devastated by two years of war.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he hoped his country could celebrate “a day of national joy” as early as Monday evening with “the return of all hostages” held in Gaza.
