Comparing Cornell University’s programs in Haiti and Tanzania, Dr. William Pape warns of the imminent risk of an irreversible “brain drain.”

In the early 2000s, in Mwanza, Tanzania, there was only one community health center serving a population of 15 million, with just one doctor for every 50,000 inhabitants.
Twenty-four years later, thanks to a partnership with Cornell University, Tanzania has made spectacular progress, building one of the most robust health systems in East Africa.
This situation has deeply concerned Dr. William Pape, professor at Cornell University in New York, who notes the striking disparity between Haiti and Tanzania within the same program.
