It is 5:40 a.m. when the 71-seat aircraft, marked with the orange inscription “Sunrise Airways - One Caribbean,” takes off for Boston on this Tuesday, March 17, 2026. A few journalists, some travel agency owners, a few VIPs, and some trusting passengers who had purchased their tickets as soon as the announcement was made are on board. This is Sunrise’s very first flight linking Haiti—specifically the North—to this part of the United States, which is heavily populated by the Haitian diaspora.
At the diplomatic lounge of the Cap-Haïtien International Airport, the Sunrise Airways team is putting the final touches in place to begin the inauguration ceremony. A small group that arrived from Port-au-Prince at 9:30 a.m. grows slightly impatient in the reception area. But very quickly, savory bites and appealing cocktails calm the empty stomachs that were complaining, and it is just past noon when Mrs. Johanne Destin, coordinator of the Provincial Airports Coordination Unit, launches the brief ceremony.
