In today’s edition of Le Nouvelliste, an article dominates the front page: “The Debt of Blood: From Complicity to the Redemption of Elites and the State.” The subject captures the current situation in Haiti, compares it to what prevailed in Colombia in the early 2000s, and proposes possible solutions. The article deserves careful reading—not necessarily to agree with the author’s proposals, but at least to help fuel reflection.

For several months now, Le Nouvelliste has been publishing similar pieces. They are fairly long, well-crafted, address original topics, or offer perspectives different from what is usually found in the Haitian press. The author is Réginald Surin, a Haitian economist. He currently serves as Director of Studies and Business Development at one of Haiti’s three largest commercial banks and uses his free time to cultivate the field of ideas.
