There is a real disagreement between the Conseil électoral provisoire and the government over the cost of the upcoming elections. For Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, the electoral budget presented by the CEP, estimated at 250 million dollars, is “unacceptable and absurd.” At the same time, sources within the CEP contacted by Le Nouvelliste justify this budget.
Even today, neither the Electoral Council nor the government can put forward dates for the next elections, while the country has been in a “transition” mode and awaiting elections since July 2021, following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. Without an electoral calendar, budget, or decree to govern the elections—and with criminal groups continuing to terrorize the population in several departments—the chances of holding elections this year are considerably diminishing.
