In less than half a century, Haiti has undergone a radical demographic transformation. In the 1970s, the country had approximately 5 million inhabitants. According to a recent document from the Institut Haïtien de Statistique et d’Informatique (IHSI), the population is now close to 12 million inhabitants. It has therefore more than doubled within the span of two generations.

This statistical finding raises a fundamental question, highlighted by economist Kesner Pharel, CEO of Group Croissance, during his appearance on Magik 9 this Wednesday, May 20, 2026. “Are we producing enough to meet this demand in terms of population growth?” the economist wondered, especially since economic growth has not followed the same pace as population growth.
