It is unclear what the Haitian justice system can still do in the case of the assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse. The main suspects who were in the custody of the Haitian justice system were extradited to the United States on Sunday, September 20, 2026. The Haitian government, through Minister of Justice and Public Security Patrick Pelissier, stands by this decision, while the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSPJ), through a position statement leaked to the press, denounces it. The Haitian population, languishing under the weight of insecurity and its consequences, has its mind elsewhere. This does nothing, however, to diminish the affront suffered by the Haitian justice system in this case.
While some denounce the manner in which the accused in the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse were extradited to the United States, this cannot erase the fact that the Haitian justice system had failed to organize any trial related to the case in five years. Yet the U.S. justice system has already handed down several convictions. It is difficult to predict whether the Haitian justice system will have another opportunity to get its head above water in this case.
