Back to square one. Today, no one is able to say when the elections will take place in Haiti. Although the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) has not yet officially announced its inability to hold the elections on December 13 as planned, it is beginning discussions with key stakeholders regarding new dates for the electoral calendar...

This time, the CEP wants to involve the largest number of stakeholders possible in drafting the electoral calendar. The meeting on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, with the Prime Minister and heads of various public security entities did not set a date for the election in the country.

"We are working on the electoral calendar. The consultation process with stakeholders is ongoing, but we cannot yet advance a date," an electoral advisor told the Nouvelliste over the phone on Wednesday evening. He emphasized that operations already underway, such as the registration of voters, the registration of candidates, and the enrollment of 30,000 members of political organizations, are continuing.

In a statement, the CEP reports having held a meeting on Tuesday, October 13, with Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, the acting commander-in-chief of the Haitian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Derby Guerrier; the Minister of Defense, Mario Andrésol; the Director General of the National Police of Haiti (PNH), André Vladimir Paraison; the commander-in-chief of the Gang Suppression Force (FRG), General Erdenebat Batsuuri, and Jack Christofides.
The electoral council, which wanted to emphasize that this meeting was chaired by its president, Peterson Pierre-Louis, at the CEP headquarters (while the Prime Ministry claims it was chaired by the Prime Minister), states that "the discussions mainly revolved around assessing the security situation in the country in light of updating the electoral calendar and identifying the necessary mechanisms to evaluate the security conditions for future elections."
"Through this consultation process with the relevant authorities, the CEP aims to organize general elections under acceptable security conditions, allowing citizens to freely exercise their voting rights and participate in the renewal of political personnel in accordance with democratic principles," affirms the CEP.
For its part, the Prime Ministry also informs in a statement that Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé chaired on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, "an important security meeting with the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) in the presence of the Minister of Defense, the Director General of the National Police of Haiti (PNH), the commander-in-chief of the Haitian Armed Forces (FAd'H), and the commander-in-chief of the Gang Suppression Force (FRG)."
This meeting, according to the Prime Ministry, "allowed for an assessment of the national security situation and examination of the necessary arrangements to create the essential security conditions for organizing the upcoming elections."
"The government reaffirms its determination to work, in collaboration with the relevant institutions, to establish a secure environment conducive to holding credible, inclusive, and democratic elections. This assessment should enable the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) to have reliable data and a clearer view of the current security situation," details the statement from the Prime Ministry.
Furthermore, the removal in the new version of the electoral decree of several safeguards meant to ensure the credibility of the electoral process continues to fuel debates...
