On May 1, 2023, Le Nouvelliste, the dean of the Haitian press and the oldest daily newspaper published in French in the Americas, celebrates its 125th anniversary. The paper has been published without significant interruption since 1898. We owe thanks to its founders, Guillaume Chéraquit and Henri Chauvet, as well as the teams across all disciplines who have kept the presses running over the years. We are also grateful to the leaders, collaborators, readers, advertisers, and friends who breathe life into the newspaper day after day.

When Le Nouvelliste was founded in Haiti at the end of the 19th century, nobody could have predicted such longevity for a press organ in a country that has always been challenging for newspapers since colonial times, let alone for any enterprise. However, the founders had a clear editorial line and commercial policy for their project. They wanted to publish a modern daily that prioritized information; a newspaper funded by subscriptions and advertising. The formula has remained unchanged for 125 years. Le Nouvelliste continues to be a commercial enterprise tasked with informing the Haitian population.
