The Directorate of Epidemiology, Laboratories, and Research (DELR) has issued a warning regarding cases of hospitalized acute glomerulonephritis in healthcare centers located in Haiti's metropolitan area and provincial cities. Nephro-pediatrician Judith Exantus emphasizes that Haiti has experience in dealing with glomerulonephritis cases. She highlights streptococcus as one of the most common microbes circulating in Haiti and urges parents to remain vigilant and adhere to hygiene rules.
Dr. Judith Exantus explains that glomerulonephritis is an inflammatory process that affects the glomerulus, the structure closest to the nephron. This condition leads to various manifestations in children when infected. The inflammation of the glomerulus often arises from infections, which are commonly found in impoverished countries with inadequate healthcare systems and unfavorable socio-economic conditions.
