There is no crime imaginable that has not been committed in Martissant over the past two years. On Tuesday, June 1, 2021, the warring armed groups caused irreparable disruption to the lives of tens of thousands of residents in this suburb of Port-au-Prince, consequently affecting the lives of millions of people in the four departments of the Grand South. Even after two years, Martissant continues to be a symbol of the authorities' inaction and failure in the war against gangs, serving as undeniable evidence of a failed state.
Even today, after two years, I vividly remember the face of a 16-year-old girl who resided in Martissant 4, subjected to the horrifying experience of being raped by several bandits in the presence of her father and younger brother. As we sat at the sports center in Carrefour, where she and her family sought refuge after the attacks, she recounted the brutal details of the collective rape, her head lowered and her nails bitten down to the point of bleeding.
