The European Union could adopt its own sanctions against those who encourage violence in Haiti, according to statements made by the EU Ambassador to Port-au-Prince, Stefano Gatto. He mentioned this during a conversation with Haitian journalists regarding the EU-Latin America and Caribbean Summit scheduled for July 17th and 18th, 2023. Gatto explained that this scenario is being considered in Brussels.

"We have automatically adopted UN sanctions, which currently target only one person. The expert panels will formulate their conclusions starting from September. Automatically, individuals sanctioned by the United Nations will also be sanctioned by the European Union. Beyond this process, discussions are taking place in Brussels. Within the European Council, there is a proposal to adopt our own European sanctions. However, no decision has been made yet. There are several factors to consider, and they may not necessarily target the same individuals who have been sanctioned by the United States, Canada, or the Dominican Republic. It would be an autonomous choice," explained Stefano Gatto.
