All police officers, regardless of their rank, who have been on extended leave for more than three months are required to return their weapons and vehicles within five days, as demanded by the general direction of the National Police. In a context where law enforcement is increasingly called upon to counter the threat posed by armed gangs, the police institution aims to regain control over its weapons and equipment.
In a circular issued on August 16th, the Haitian National Police's general direction did not provide specific figures regarding the count of officers on extended leave for more than three months. The institution emphasizes its intention to simply recover the firearms and vehicles held by these inactive officers.
