On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken co-led a high-level meeting with Ariel Henry on the security situation in Haiti. At the opening of the meeting, the U.S. top diplomat continued to advocate for the deployment of a multinational security mission in Haiti. According to Blinken, his country is prepared to seek Congressional approval for an allocation of 100 million dollars for the mission. The Department of Defense is also ready to provide air support and intelligence assistance, he detailed alongside PM Henry and Kenyan Foreign Affairs Minister Alfred Nganga Mutua.
Antony Blinken commended Kenya's willingness to lead the multinational security mission. He also praised the outlined vision of the Kenyan authorities regarding the restoration of security in Haiti. This vision, resulting from an assessment mission dispatched last August, revolves around three main axes according to Blinken. These include operational support to the police, static assistance in securing strategic sites, and long-term reinforcement of the HNP's capacity. Although no specific date was mentioned for the implementation of such a force, Blinken stated in his address that it will be deployed in the coming months.
