In 2023, over 3.8 billion dollars were transferred without counterpart to Haiti by Haitians living abroad. This amount has been crucial for the country's survival, a trend that has persisted for years. Although new GDP calculation methods have reduced the diaspora's contribution to 20% of the overall base, down from nearly 30% before, their role in the national income remains significant.
The funds from the diaspora support a wide range of expenses, from phone cards to education, and from the first meal of the day to healthcare costs in many families. Both everyday expenses and investments rely heavily on diaspora transfers.
