This week, the Permanent Delegation of Haiti to UNESCO officially submitted the candidacy of the historical site Bois-Caïman to the UNESCO Network of Sites Related to the History and Memory of Slavery. Haiti's Ambassador to UNESCO, Dominique Dupuy, informed the newspaper that the announcement of the candidacy's status is scheduled twice a year, on March 25 and April 23. Therefore, it is necessary to wait until these dates to find out if Bois-Caïman's candidacy has been accepted.
While Haiti is rich in internationally renowned historical sites, this is the first time the country has proposed a site for inclusion in this global registry. In a statement released on January 10, the Permanent Delegation of Haiti to UNESCO, in collaboration with the Haitian National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO, officially proposed the inclusion of the historical site Bois-Caïman in the UNESCO Network of Sites Related to the History and Memory of Slavery.
