Undoubtedly, 2023 has been a very challenging year in Haiti, throughout the entire year. The rampant insecurity in the country has impacted all spheres of activities. Cases of human rights violations have remained blatant. "The year has been marked by cases of murder, kidnappings followed by ransom kidnappings, massacres, among others," explained Marie Rosy Auguste Ducena, program manager at the National Network for the Defense of Human Rights (RNDDH).
Over 1,047 people were murdered in the country from January to December 2023, according to information provided by CE-JLAP, relayed by Marie Rosy Auguste Ducena. She did not have exact figures for the number of kidnappings recorded in the country, but explained that she had observed an increase in this phenomenon. "The most flexible estimates indicate 5 to 9 cases of kidnapping recorded per day in the country from January to December 2023. Many cases of murder and kidnappings followed by ransom are spectacular, where the criminals acted openly," she denounced.
