Venezuela received a $500 million payment from Haiti for fuel supplies to the island under a regional cooperation agreement, stated the South American country's Ministry of Information on Friday, as reported by Reuters on Friday, February 23, 2024.
Under the presidency of Hugo Chavez, Venezuela sent millions of barrels of oil and fuel to its Caribbean neighbors under flexible payment terms, many of which, including Haiti, struggled to repay their debts. President Nicolas Maduro expressed his desire to revive this pact. Bloomberg was the first to reveal Haiti's payment, noting that the total accumulated debt amounted to $2.3 billion, according to the Reuters dispatch. It further stated that Venezuela was in talks with other countries for similar payments.
