Kenya is now prepared to deploy a contingent of 1,000 police officers to Haiti to lead a multinational mission aimed at restoring public order in the country, announced President William Ruto in a statement released on the Kenyan presidency's website on Friday, March 1, 2024. This announcement follows the signing of an agreement, a reciprocity instrument, between Kenya and Haiti. The document was signed in the presence of President William Ruto and Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry on Friday at the State House in Nairobi. "From Kenya, we are ready for this deployment, and I urge all other partners worldwide to step up their efforts so that we can provide a timely response," President Ruto stated. Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry, on his part, thanked President Ruto and the Kenyan people for offering to lead the Multinational Mission of Support for Security in Haiti aimed at stabilizing the country. "This mission brings hope for the future of humanity, for a people who do not see how they will live tomorrow," said the Prime Minister. Henry promises that his government will provide the Kenyan contingent with all necessary support to make the mission a success. The reciprocity agreement was signed by Cabinet Secretary for Interior Kithure Kindiki for Kenya, and Minister James P. Cadet for Haiti. Other Kenyan dignitaries present at the occasion included Cabinet Secretary for Water Zachary Njeru, Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome, and National Security Advisor Monica Juma, among others. In response to the Security Council resolution, the National Security Council and Cabinet of Kenya approved the deployment of police officers on October 13, 2023, a decision unanimously approved by Parliament on November 16, 2023. However, following a petition filed before the High Court in January, the Court ruled that a reciprocity agreement with Haiti was necessary. In addition to Kenya, other countries have pledged forces for the mission in Haiti, including Benin, Chad, Bangladesh, Barbados, and the Bahamas. Source: Kenyan Presidency.
