The Biden administration will not deploy US troops to Haiti to assist its national police in addressing a rapidly evolving security crisis, a White House official stated, as reported in an article by the Miami Herald published Monday, March 4, 2024, in the evening.
"The United States is not sending US troops to Haiti to support the security operations of the Haitian National Police," a National Security Council official said, following 72 hours of diplomatic contacts between Haiti and the USA.
"We are urgently mobilizing all the support that we and the international community can immediately provide to Haiti, particularly to the Haitian National Police, to ensure they can restore security for the benefit of the people."
Instead, the White House is working to "accelerate" the deployment of the force led by Kenya, said John Kirby, a White House national security communications advisor, to journalists on Monday.
"Throughout the weekend, senior US government officials remained in close contact with senior Haitian government officials and members of the international community to help stabilize the situation and move quickly toward a lasting political solution," Kirby said.
"We are working with international partners to provide immediate support to the Haitian National Police and accelerate the deployment of the multinational security support mission that will help restore security urgently. Violence only serves to delay a democratic transition while destroying and disrupting the lives of thousands of people."
