Jocelin Vilier, the General Director of the National Port Authority (APN), confirmed to Le Nouvelliste that bandits attacked Caribbean Port Services S.A (CPS). A portion of the port facilities is no longer under the control of security forces who are attempting to regain control. The incidents occurred on Thursday, March 7, 2024.
"Bandits destroyed the fence of the CPS complex. Containers stored there were looted. The looting scenes continue this Friday," Mr. Vilier reported.
According to the APN official, security forces were able to contain the intrusion. "We still have control of the public docks, another terminal, a rice-bagging company, and our administrative building," he assured.
On Friday, there was no armed attack against the port. However, Jocelin Vilier indicated that the institution is closely monitoring the security situation. "Thanks to the support of the FADH and our security agents, we are resisting," he stated.
Caribbean Port Services S.A (CPS) issued a statement on Thursday, March 7, announcing the suspension of its operations at the port. "The Management of Caribbean Port Services S.A. informs the Public in general and its clientele in particular that during recent disturbances to public order, it has been the victim, since March 1 and again last night, of malicious acts of sabotage and vandalism. Caribbean Port Services S.A. is unable to carry out its operations and is obliged to suspend all services offered to its clientele," the statement reads.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Philippe Coles, president of CPS, indicated that dozens of gang members stormed the port terminal, looting containers, damaging the port's security apparatus, and forcing the terminal to indefinitely suspend its operations. "It's total paralysis right now. The gangs are in control. They have the upper hand," he lamented.
