Royal Caribbean has canceled all its cruises to Labadee, a private beach located in northern Haiti, until further notice.
On Wednesday evening, the cruise line informed customers who had booked cruises with scheduled stops at Labadee next week that their visits had been either redirected to another port or exchanged for additional days at sea.
Michael Bayley, a Royal Caribbean International executive, issued an update on Thursday to provide further explanation about the scope of the cancellations.
"We have suspended visits to Labadee, Haiti, for the next 7 days and will continue to suspend them on an ongoing basis with a 3-day advance notice to our guests," stated Michael Bayley.
A company spokesperson indicated in a statement that Royal Caribbean's global security team is closely monitoring the situation in Haiti, emphasizing that these changes result from an abundance of caution from the team.
Haiti has been embroiled in a security, humanitarian, and political crisis for the past three weeks. Two civilian prisons have been attacked and emptied of their occupants. This worsening situation prompted Royal Caribbean to adjust its plans.
Earlier this week, Royal Caribbean had initially canceled only shore excursions but had maintained visits to Labadee. These included activities such as jet skiing, kayaking, and fishing.
The canceled visits are being replaced by either another port or an additional day at sea. "Symphony of the Seas" on March 17 replaced Labadee with a sea day, and "Adventure of the Seas" on March 15 replaced Labadee with a visit to Turks & Caicos.
