At least fifteen corpses were noticed on Pan-American Avenue in Pétion-Ville early Monday, March 18, 2024. Images of these lifeless bodies, bloodied and riddled with bullets, were widely shared on social media.
The circumstances surrounding the deaths of these individuals are currently unknown. An ambulance was filmed lifting the bodies late in the morning.
Furthermore, armed individuals launched an assault on the neighborhoods of Laboule and Thomassin in the hills of Pétion-Ville. Automatic gunfire woke up the residents, who made multiple distress calls.
Le Nouvelliste learned that several private residences were looted and ransacked by the criminals. The house of Judge Pierre Volmar Demesyeux of the Superior Court of Auditors and Administrative Disputes was also attacked, according to a source close to him. The judge, the newspaper learned, was evacuated.
A bank branch, a gas station, and other private businesses were also targeted in these neighborhoods. The newspaper tried unsuccessfully to contact the police. However, a resident reported that an armored vehicle was attempting to reach Thomassin. Its progress was slowed by barricades erected by the bandits on the road.
Since last Friday, this attack is the second disruption of activities in the last region of the metropolitan area, which was still relatively calm.
