After the ransacking of several branches of private banks in the metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince, it was the Central Bank of Haiti (BRH) that was targeted by the criminals on Monday, March 18, 2024. The central bank confirmed Tuesday morning that its premises were attacked the day before by armed bandits. The bank of banks mentioned this assault in a note published on its X account. "We wish to inform the general public that, faced with an incident that occurred yesterday near the BRH premises on Rue Pavée, law enforcement and the institution's security team responded with professionalism and efficiency," BRH stated. "We are deeply grateful to our agents and the national police for their vigilance and constant commitment to protecting our community. The security of our operations and the protection of our employees remain our top priority," the note continued. The newspaper learned that bandits were killed during the clashes. "Approximately 4 bandits were killed. One of our agents was injured by gunfire," revealed a source close to the bank to Le Nouvelliste, noting that security agents were supported by the PNH and the FADH to repel the criminals. Since February 29, 2024, following attacks on police stations, public and private institutions, banks have also been targeted by gangs. So far, neither the Professional Association of Banks (APB) nor the regulator, the Central Bank of Haiti, has released a report on the attacks on the banking sector.
