February 29th, 2024 marked a decisive turning point in the functioning of the healthcare system in Haiti and will certainly have long-term consequences.
The escalation of violence in downtown Port-au-Prince has led to the closure of numerous hospitals, including Saint-François de Sales Hospital and the State University Hospital of Haiti, the latter being the largest university hospital center in the country with its 14 services. Every day, there is a new announcement from a public or private healthcare center informing about the restriction of its activities or its closure. A week ago, the Haitian Medical Association and the Association of Private Hospitals in Haiti sounded the alarm about input shortages and the numerous challenges facing healthcare professionals, which risk plunging the country into an unprecedented health crisis.
