Haiti's ambassador to the UN, Antonio Rodrigue, called on the international community to act swiftly to prevent "genocide in Haiti" during the Security Council meeting on Monday, April 22, 2024. "It is absolutely vital to act quickly to prevent the crime of genocide from being committed in the country," the Haitian diplomat said. "We welcome the call made by the foreign ministers of the G7 countries in the statement of April 19. In this statement, they called on the international community to strengthen its humanitarian support to the Haitian people. In the same vein, we welcome the fact that in the statement, they recognize that the Haitian people can no longer wait for the deployment of the multinational support mission," the diplomat continued, emphasizing the "urgent need for robust support" to the Haitian National Police to address security challenges.
Antonio Rodrigue pointed out that there is a "glimmer of hope" in terms of political and governance. Progress has been made through the mediation of prominent personalities from CARICOM. These advancements, he explained, have enabled political actors, civil society, and the private sector to reach an agreement. The decree establishing the Presidential Transition Council has been published in the official journal Le Moniteur, and the focus will now be on the selection of the transitional government, Antonio Rodrigue explained. Several members of the Security Council have called for the rapid deployment of the MSSM and expressed solidarity with Haiti in addressing the humanitarian crisis, and some countries have called for sanctions against actors funding the gangs.
