Armed criminals opened fire on Monday, July 29, during a visit by Prime Minister Garry Conille to the State University Hospital of Haiti in downtown Port-au-Prince. In several videos circulating on social media, Haitian and Kenyan police officers can be seen rushing to take cover and trying to protect their position. Bursts of automatic gunfire were heard, and several armored vehicles were seen around the hospital.

Contacted by Le Nouvelliste, a close associate of the Prime Minister indicated that he had already left the premises when the shooting began. "The head of government visited the HUEH with a CNN journalist to whom he had given an interview. The visit aimed to illustrate the consequences of gang activities in the downtown area and the country. He was able to tour the site with the journalist without incident. It was only when he was leaving that the gunfire erupted," this source said.
