If the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT) has little direct influence over the restoration of security in the country, it also appears unable to make progress on forming the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP), which falls squarely within its remit. The CPT has now given itself until next Wednesday to establish the CEP, according to a statement provided to Le Nouvelliste by a council advisor.

While the Presidential Council was expected to finalize a decree in a Cabinet meeting last Wednesday to appoint the members of the Provisional Electoral Council, that meeting did not take place. "There are still too many disputes within the various sectors regarding the selection of their representative to the CEP, which is why the Cabinet meeting, which was supposed to decide on the appointments, could not be held," a CPT member told Le Nouvelliste.
