On Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg, Haiti’s national women’s soccer team faced off against Canada. The Canadians were counting on their Haitian counterparts to help pay tribute to their veteran player, Desiree Scott, 37 years old, with 188 caps to her name. A native of Manitoba. Unsurprisingly, the Canadian team outclassed our Grenadières with a wide 4-1 victory.

Despite the defeat, the match—played before 9,211 spectators—offered far more than a simple sporting spectacle. That Saturday afternoon, a little piece of Haiti took its place in the stands of this university stadium, located in the heart of Winnipeg, more than 2,000 kilometers from Montreal. A place where one would hardly expect to find such a vibrant Haitian community.
