Canada had taken a clear stand in favor of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé in his standoff with the CPT. At the end of his mission, Ambassador André François Giroux, asked whether or not he was satisfied with the way things were progressing, the scheduled elections and governance, said that “it will mainly be up to Haitian citizens to express themselves on that.” “What I can tell you,” he continued, “is that Mr. Fils-Aimé is a responsible and responsive partner. That is to say, when I go to see him and I need his help or intervention to help me implement some of my projects, he is someone who takes action and responds well, and his ministerial team does the same,” according to the Canadian diplomat.
“The reality is that we are moving forward slowly but surely on security and on elections. I can tell you that the transitional government is the first to deplore the slowness of things. But we have a great deal of sympathy,” Giroux said, stressing that the reality is anything but simple. “We live in a complex world. We can identify needs today, place an order, but it may take six months before the goods are delivered. That is the challenge we face on a daily basis,” the Canadian diplomat said.
