"If impunity is tolerated, there will be more massacres in Haiti," warned Dr. Jean William Pape, Linda V. Turnier, former commercial banker, and Louis-Henri Mars, founding member of Lakou Lapè, a Haitian organization dedicated to promoting peace, in an op-ed published in the Miami Herald, which also called for pressure on the government for an independent and transparent investigation into the massacres perpetrated in Kenscoff.
"We call on the United Nations, the United States, France, Canada, CARICOM, and human rights organizations to pressure Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé and his Minister of Justice to ensure that any investigation conducted into the Kenscoff massacres is independent, transparent, and leads to the arrest and trial of those responsible," wrote the signatories. "Delivering justice to the victims and holding the perpetrators accountable is the only way to ensure that this massacre will be the last. As elections approach, this judicial process will mark a crucial milestone for democracy in Haiti," the signatories emphasized.
