Some schools in the Republic have already opened their doors, but the official start of the 2023-2024 school year is set for Monday, September 11. On the eve of the official beginning of the academic year, Port-au-Prince doesn't have the appearance of a city preparing to welcome its students. Even the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training is keeping a low profile regarding the event. The police are not announcing any measures, as they used to, to ensure the safety of students in the streets. Street vendors of traditional supplies are keeping a low profile. The Ministry of Public Works has not initiated any road repairs, and the solid waste collection service is conspicuously absent.
Nothing indicates that the start of the school year is imminent in the Haitian capital. There have even been rumors of a postponement of the school reopening to early October. The MENFP neither confirms nor denies. In this deteriorating atmosphere where the government proves incapable of protecting lives and property, the MENFP is unable to enforce anything. It turns a blind eye to schools that have opened their doors since August, just as it turns a blind eye to schools that, of their own accord, postpone the reopening to October. The Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training is not even able to enforce its single textbook for the 1st and 2nd fundamental grade classes.
