US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in a statement praising the renewal of the arms embargo on non-state actors and associated sanctions, emphasized measures already taken by the Biden administration, notably the creation of a "transnational criminal investigation unit in Haiti to facilitate investigations and prosecutions of transnational crime, including those linked to the United States."
"This new unit will focus on crimes such as firearms and ammunition smuggling, human trafficking, and activities of transnational gangs," the statement reads, drawing a connection between corrupt actors and instability, as well as violence in Haiti. Blinken affirmed, "We will continue to use all available tools to hold corrupt actors accountable, individuals who support gang violence and other criminal activities in Haiti. The United States remains committed to promoting peace and prosperity for the Haitian people."
