In recent weeks, messages advocating for the respect of women's and girls' rights have been echoing from all directions. Activities centered around this theme are ongoing daily. It's commendable that voices are rising to demand respect for the rights of women, a group heavily impacted by the socio-political crisis that has brought the country to its knees. Since the resurgence of kidnappings in the country, especially in Port-au-Prince, the incidents of raped and/or murdered women and girls have become too numerous to count. Sometimes, these crimes are even filmed and shamelessly shared on social media. How humiliating! It almost seems inhumane. Dehumanizing.
The current situation signifies a regression in the respect for the rights of women and girls in the country. Alongside the rampant sexual assaults, women and girls are being plunged into poverty. Even though there are no available statistics, it is easy to observe that many women are present in displaced persons' camps. Girls are more prevalent on the streets than before.
