In a 5-minute video transmitted from phone to phone on March 4, 2024, scenes of looting at Saint-François de Sales Hospital could be seen.
Yesterday, a rumor of a fire at the same building, quickly denied by an employee of the institution, was also circulating.
In a phone interview, Dr. Bernard Joseph Jr confirmed to Le Nouvelliste that it is indeed Saint-François de Sales Hospital. "Yes, it's indeed Saint-François de Sales Hospital. I was able to recognize the location in the video, and personnel on site confirmed that the building was looted," said Dr. Bernard Joseph Jr.
"For now, we cannot provide a tally. However, I saw that the administrative buildings were looted. Those who forcibly entered the hospital premises took the solar panels and the entire renewable energy system that we took a long time to set up," reported the head of the oncology department at this institution.
However, Dr. Joseph Jr emphasized that patients were evacuated between Thursday and Friday well before this looting incident.
Since Thursday, February 29, downtown Port-au-Prince has become impassable, with buildings housing key institutions currently serving as temporary shelters or falling victim to looting scenes.
Pending a thaw in the situation, healthcare professionals and patients are left in limbo.
